School Sexual Health Clinics Could Reduce Teenage Pregnancy Rate

Young people are more likely to use sexual health services if they can access them in schools, according to research being presented today at the Royal College of Nursing’s 2009 International Research Conference in Cardiff. Dr Debra Salmon, Reader in Community Health at the University of West England, will be presenting the evaluation of a pilot scheme which took place at 16 schools in the Neighbourhood Renewal Area of Bristol.

Tenn. Lawmaker Proposes Bill That Would Require HIV Testing Among Prison Inmates Prior To Release

Tennessee state Rep. Brenda Gilmore (D) has introduced a bill (H.B. 52) that would require HIV tests for prison inmates before their release as part of a larger plan to address the spread of HIV/AIDS in the state, WSMV.com reports.

Van Andel Institute Study Rules Out Transcriptional Coactivators As Useful Herpes Antiviral Drug Targets

Researchers at Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) have determined that the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) does not require transcriptional coactivators for viral gene expression early in the infection process. The finding is significant in determining that, in contradiction to earlier models, chemical inhibitors of these cellular proteins are not likely to serve as useful antiviral drugs.
New HIV Diagnoses Show Burden Continuing In Gay Men

A high rate of transmission remains among gay men in the UK with 38% (2,830) of all new diagnoses probably acquired through sex between men. Although diagnoses among gay men are slightly down on 2007 (3,050), they are at their second highest level since recording began. Between 1999 and 2007 there was a 110% increase in diagnoses among gay men (1,450 cases to 3,050).
