HSV type 2 virus causes blisters or groups of small ulcers (open sores) on and around the genitals, in both men and women. Though a highly contagious disease, the infection cannot spread through contact with toilets, towels or other objects used by an infected person, as the virus dies quickly, once out of the body. HSV1 causes cold sores in your mouth. It’s usually spread through saliva or through direct skin contact like kissing. Genital Herpes is an extremely common STD with 1 in 4 women and 1 in 5 men currently infected with the STD in the USA. Genital infection is the second mutual form of herpes virus. Genital Herpes outbreaks occur as seldom as once per year. However, some individuals may have them as much as once per week. Women also may develop vaginal discharge and painful urination (dysuria ). Men develop dysuria if the lesion is near the opening of the urethra (meatus). Women get more severe symptoms then men. If women get blisters in the vagina, cervix or urethra they may think of them as some other problem.

Patients on antidepressants and their families or caregivers should watch for new or worsening depression symptoms, unusual changes in behavior, thoughts of suicide, anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, difficulty sleeping, irritability, hostility, aggressiveness, impulsivity, restlessness, or extreme hyperactivity. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have thoughts of suicide or if any of these symptoms are severe or occur suddenly. Patients should address specific medical concerns with their physicians. There are antiviral medicines  to reduce the outbreaks of genital herpes. Acyclovir ans zovirax ointments are few of them.

Acyclovir

Acyclovir is the most common antiviral medicine used for this purpose. The baby may need to take the medicine for several weeks. Acyclovir, 10 mg/kg intravenously every 8 hours, is considered the treatment of choice. There are no published data on the optimal treatment for HSV pneumonia. Acyclovir was the original antiviral drug of this family and is now available in generic form at a much reduced cost. For Genital Herpes infected pregnant women, acyclovir and valtrex are considered safe to be used suppressively to reduce outbreaks in the last trimester.

Patients with acyclovir alone healed in an average time of 7.7 days, while patients on the combination healed in an average of 6 days. Only one patient in the acyclovir and vidarabine group had a healing time longer than 7 days, whereas six patients in the acyclovir and placebo group had healing times longer than 7 days.

Treatment

Treatment typically begins at the first symptoms of an outbreak. Treating the sores consists of keeping them clean and dry. Wash your hands after touching the sores because of their highly contagious nature. Treatment of the infection will depend on its severity. Mild infection is typically treated with topical and sometimes oral antiviral medication. Treatments are available to speed up the healing of the genital sores. There is no cure that could treat herpes; any medication will not eliminate the virus from the body. Several antiviral drugs against herpes are used as a cure taken by mouth when the early symptoms occurs (primary herpes), and by recurrences of symptoms at discretion only.
