Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety is characterised by  hypervigilance and worrying . Anxious people evaluate ï»¿ life with apprehension,  fearing   situations that may provoke  anxiety, or feel anxious with no apparent reason. They may experience severe agitation, physical tension, heart palpitations, rapid breathing, an ‘anxiety’ stomach, disturbed sleeping patterns , or merely not be at ease. Anxiety is common . Anxiety can be  severe (panic attacks) or moderate (free floating), stimulus specific (examination anxiety) or without an obvious stimulus , and be temporary or anger’ persistent (phobias) . Anxiety is part of many conditions such as generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, phobias, and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) . The causes of anxiety are believed to include real or imagined experiences of threat, unconscious conflicts, someone or something being too much , misunderstanding of physical sensations, a cultural norm known as the age of anxiety, or the philosophical entity of existential anxiety. Depression is characterised by hopelessness and meaninglessness . Depressed people frequently evaluate life negatively, self-reproach, have unexpressed anger or aggression, and experience profound  dejection and sadness . Lethargy, isolation, and disturbed sleeping and eating are also features. Depression can be severe, moderate, or mild , and last a long or short  time. In the UK, depression affects 23 in every 1000  males and 28 in every 1000 women  (ONS).
 
The different types of depression include endogenous, believed to result from a constitutional predisposition, and exogenous (reactive) and post natal depression, both often seen as reactions to events taking place in life . A major depressive episode can become a psychosis. Agitated depression can involve a high risk of suicide. Neurotic depression involves  anxiety, inhibition and guilt . The cause is believed to be, in psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy,,  unexpressed anger or mourning, , or being in touch with the depressing reality of life, and in cognitive behavioural therapy, depressogenic thinking.
