According to research cited in this Diseases and Disorders series title, the human papillomavirus (HPV) is “so prevalent that at least 75 percent of sexually active men and women come into contact with it at some time in their lives.” A recent vaccine, which targets cervical-cancer-causing strains and is recommended for girls as young as 11, has brought increased awareness, but HPV still remains relatively unknown in the general public, particularly among young people. This title gives a comprehensive overview of the science behind this often sexually transmitted disease. Unfortunately, a few insensitive photos and passages greatly undermine the book’s otherwise informative tone. A bizarrely angled photo of a doctor set to perform a colposcopy is more frightening than illuminating, and a text box entitled “The Yuk Factor,” detailing a doctor’s disgusted reaction to a patient’s Genital Warts, is particularly misguided.
