Genital Warts or Crabs?

April 26, 2009 by admin

How do I know the difference between warts and crabs? I had a flea infestation about a month ago. At the time i was getting bit on my waste line and later on my genitals. I wasn't sure if it was only fleas or lice(crabs) too.

The fleas are gone now, but the situation was really stressful (sometimes stress leads to wart outbreaks).

I have been sexually active with my 10 month gf for about that long, and because she has only been with one other person and is on the pill we don't use a condom anymore.

So I feel i might have crabs because the bumps are white and sometimes puss comes out when they pop, but sometimes they just bleed. But i don't see any crabs on me.

But i might have warts because my ex gf, who i haven't had sex with in about a year, just recently told me she has been diagnosed what cervical cancer. Which is sometimes caused by HPV (Genital Warts).

I am really confused and don't no what kind of doctor to see. Because i don't have a regular doctor. Dermatologist? Help

    What causes genital warts?
Genital warts are caused by a virus known as the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). This is generally believed to be transmitted through skin to skin contact.

What are the signs and symptoms?
You or your partner may notice pinkish/white small lumps or larger cauliflower-shaped lumps on the genital area
Warts can appear on the vulva, penis, scrotum or anus, in the vagina and on the cervix
They may itch but are usually painless
Not everyone who comes into contact with the virus will develop warts.

    What are they?
Crab lice are small insects which live in coarse body hair. This means they can be found not only in pubic hair but also in underarm hair, on hairy legs and chests.

How do you know if you have them?
The most common symptom is itching in the infected areas. It may be possible to see minute specks of black powder in your underwear – this is their droppings (faeces). It is sometimes possible to see lice on the skin as well as eggs or hatched eggs as pale dots attached at the base of pubic or other hair. It may be 2-3 weeks after infection before they cause the skin to itch.

    How do you get them?
Pubic lice are usually sexually transmitted but can occasionally be transferred by close physical contact or by sharing sheets or towels.

How do I get rid of them?
If you suspect you have pubic lice you should see your pharmacist, doctor or clinic. The lice can be seen on physical examination and may be examined under a microscope. Special creams, lotions and shampoos are available on prescription or over the counter which kill off both the `crabs` and their eggs.
